‘JMB man’ among 3 killed in Gaibandha, Dhaka ‘shootouts’

An alleged operative of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and two suspected hijackers were killed in separate "gunfights" with law enforcers in Gaibandha and Dhaka early today.

GAIBANDHA

Name and other details of the JMB man, who was killed in the "gunfight" between his cohorts and police at Malancha village in Gobindaganj upazila, could not be known immediately, UNB adds.
After receiving information that a gang of JMB was holding a clandestine meeting at a house of one Jahangir, police conducted a drive at the village around 1:00am, said Mozammel Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gobindaganj Police Station.
Sensing the presence of police, the JMB men opened fire on them prompting the law enforcers to retaliate that triggered the "gunfight", the OC said.
At one stage, the JMB men managed to flee the scene.
Later, police recovered the body of the JMB man and recovered some local weapons and bombs from the spot.
With this, five alleged JMB men have been killed in "gunfights" since police intensified anti-militant "drives" across the country after the wife of a superintendent of police was brutally stabbed and shot dead in Chittagong on Sunday.

An alleged leader of a doping gang was killed in a "gunfight" between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-1 at a check point in Prottasha bridge area under Turag Police Station around 1:45am, Lt Commander Md Shoaib, deputy director of Rab-1 told The Daily Star.
The deceased was identified as Nazrul.
Nazrul and two others were crossing the checkpost when Rab members signaled them to stop. The gunfight ensued when they fired at the elite force.
Nazrul fell off the bike after he was hit by a bullet, the Rab official said.
The injured was taken to Tongi General Hospital where doctors declared dead around 2:30pm, he added.
The other two fled the scene with the bike, he said.
Rab said the dead gang leader was an illegal women trafficker and a hijacker also.
The elite force members recovered one foreign-made pistol and two rounds of bullets, reads an SMS floated by the law enforcers.

In another incident, a suspected hijacker was killed in a "gunfight" with a group of hijackers in Rampura area in the capital.
Body of Kamal Parvez, 35, a resident of Uttara was recovered in Balurmath area after the "gunfight" around 12:00am, Abdul Karim, operation officer of Rab-3, told The Daily Star.
Based on information from Parvez who was detained last afternoon, as the elite force members took him to the Balurmath area where he usually meets his hijacking group members, the Rab-3 official said
Around 3:00pm yesterday, locals caught Parvez red-handed when he along with his associate was hijacking valuables from a woman in Taltola area of Khilgaon, the Rab-3 official added.
Rimon, a local tailor, was injured in the incident.
Locals handed him over to the law enforcers and a gold bangle was seized from his possession.
One USA-made pistol, one revolver and nine bullets were recovered from the scene after the gunfight, reads a separate SMS floated by the law enforcers.
