An alleged robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur early today.

The deceased was identified as Zakir, 40, from Bakila area of the upazila, Md Jabedul Islam, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj Police Station, told our correspondent.

He was an accused in eight robbery and drug related cases, the police official said.

The gunfight took place while the robbers were taking preparations to rob a house in the area around 4:00am, the OC said.

Five police officials -- Mustafizur Rahman, Siddiqur Rahman, Mamun Mia, Kamrul Islam and Shakhwat Hosen -- were injured during the gunfight.

Police also recovered a local pipe gun, four used bullets, four knives of various size and one machete.
