SC clears way for Singair municipality polls
The Supreme Court today cleared the way for holding election to Singair municipality in Manikganj on December 30.
The chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed untill January 21 next year a High Court order that halted the process for holding the election.
The chamber judge passed the order after hearing an appeal filed by the government challenging the HC order.
Deputy Attorney General Motahaer Hossain Sazu told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for the Election Commission for holding the election to Singair municipality on December 30 following the SC order.
On December 1, the HC stayed for six months the process for holding elections on allegation of irregularities in voters' list.
The order came after hearing a petition filed by Mostak Ahmed Bhuiyan, a voter of Singair, challenging the legality of the schedule of the election.
