JU summer vacation from May 12

Month-long summer vacation of Jahangirnagar University (JU) will begin from May 12.

Classes of all departments will remain suspended from May 12 while the offices of the university will remain closed from May 19 to 24, sources said.

Meanwhile, the final examination of various departments will be held as per schedule.

The university will reopen on June 10.

Situation tense at RU

Tension is mounting at Rajshahi University (RU) following the recent arrest of at least 20 students in raids conducted by the joint forces on different student halls.

Campus sources said many resident students of different dormitories have left the campus fearing further raids by joint forces.

Some students of Bangabandhu hall alleged that police also interrogate general students during the raids.

A number of general students, who have seats allotted to their name, also left the dormitories fearing police interrogation, sources added.

Regarding the raids, RU Proctor Enamul Haque told this correspondent that the matter depends upon higher authorities and the university authorities do not have anything to do in this regard.

Journo jailed for extortion

A court here on Sunday sentenced the Sreemongal correspondent of daily Jugantor to two years' imprisonment for extortion.

Judge Abdul Wadud Chowdhury of the Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict to Ahmed Farook Millat. The court also fined Millat Tk 5,000, in default he is to suffer for another month in jail.

According to the prosecution, Millat extorted Tk 5,000 from a woman with a threat of dishing out scandalous report against her at a hotel in Sreemongal on March 18. A team of joint forces caught Millat while he was taking the money.

RCCI leaders place 4-point demands

Newly elected leaders of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) yesterday placed a four-point demand before the caretaker government at a view exchange meeting with journalists at the chamber Bhaban.

Presided over by RCCI President Hasen Ali, the meeting was attended by RCCI Directors Kabirur Rahman Khan, Khandakar Hafiz, Mustafizur Rahman Sawdagar, M Sharif and AR Jamil.

Their demands include supply of natural gas through pipelines to Rajshahi, establishment of an agriculture-based Export Processing Zone, a separate electricity generation unit and a fertiliser factory.

They said implementation of the demands can ensure a balanced development of the northwestern region.

PDB CBA leader arrested

The joint forces yesterday arrested a local leader of Power Development Board (PDB) CBA and Jatiyatabadi Bidyut Shramik Dal on charges of taking bribe.

The arrestee is Abid Hasan, junior assistant accountant of PDB Satkhira office and joint secretary local PDB CBA.

Police said the army men picked him up from the local PDB office at Satkhira at about 12:00noon.

Police said he demanded Tk 1700 as bribe from Golam Mostafa of Katia area in the town for an electricity connection.

SSC examinee dies after fight over cricket

An SSC examinee, who suffered severe head injuries during a quarrel over a cricket match in Morelganj, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.

Police said Ali Ashan, 17, son of Siddikur Rahman of Uttor Chingrikhali village, had a quarrel with his classmate Russell, 17, during a cricket match at Uttar Chingrikhali village on Wednesday afternoon. At one stage, Russell struck Ali Ashan's head with a bat.

Seriously injured Ashan was first admitted to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital and was later shifted to Dhaka from Khulna Medical College hospital. He died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday morning.

Ashan sat for the SSC examination this year from Morelganj.
