'Debi' strikes a chord with THE AUDIENCE
28 cinema halls across the country are currently screening Debi, the film adaptation of Humayun Ahmed's beloved novel of the same name, this year. We visited four halls in Dhaka to see how the film is faring at the box office.
Many university students came to Star Cineplex in Bashundhara City to watch Debi along with their friends. The long queues in front of the ticket counters were an indication of people's anticipation for the film.
Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Media and Marketing Manager of Star Cineplex, said that the response to Debi has been excellent so far. After the release of the film, Star Cineplex is running twelve shows a day instead of the usual nine shows.
Similarly, Balaka Cinema Hall, which is currently screening four shows of the film daily, also has crowds consisting mostly of young people coming to watch the film. Manager of Modhumita Cinema Hall, Rezaul Karim, also informed that since its release, Debi has brought in a huge audience for them. The film is also showing at Blockbuster Cinemas and Shyamoli Cineplex at the moment.
The cast of the film - Chanchal Chowdhury and Jaya Ahsan in the roles of Misir Ali and Ranu respectively, has sparked a lot of interest amongst the moviegoers. While fans of Humayun Ahmed are excited to watch the character of Misir Ali in a film for the first time, it appears that Debi has also introduced Misir Ali to those who are not familiar with the novel.
