Barishal confirm Qualifier spot as Dhaka register lowest total of BPL season
Fortune Barishal confirmed a top-two finish in the league stage of the Bangladesh Premier League after hammering Dhaka Capitals by nine wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Barishal bowlers steamrolled over Dhaka batters, bundling them out for just 73 runs in 15.3 overs – the lowest total in this year's BPL. The previous lowest total in this year's BPL was Durbar Rajshahi's 80 against Chittagong Kings in Chattogram on January 20.
Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam created havoc, removing Liton Das (10) and Riaz Hassan (0) in the same over before Faheem Ashraf (three for 15) and Mohammad Nabi (three for nine) got in on the act to rattle Dhaka.
Barishal, in reply, lost Towhid Hridoy (15) in the third over but skipper Tamim Iqbal (21 off 14 balls not out) and Dawid Malan (37 off 16 balls not out) shared an unbroken 56-run stand for the second wicket to seal the victory in just 6.3 overs. The victory with 81 balls remaining is the biggest-ever win by a team (in terms of balls remaining) in BPL history, surpassing the previous record of 73 balls by Dhaka Dynamites against Sylhet Sixers in 2017.
Barishal have now confirmed their place in Qualifier 1 as they have 18 points from 11 matches and will either face Rangpur Riders (16 points) or Chittagong (12 points).
Meanwhile, Dhaka, who languish at sixth on the standings, exited the tournament when Chittagong beat Rangpur by five wickets in the day's first game.
