Mushy hits Bangladesh’s fastest ODI ton
This was a different Mushfiqur Rahim. If it did not appear to be the case during the first ODI against Ireland, where he batted at number six and played a cameo knock, this time he showed another level.
Improvisation and class were all part of the parcel in the tremendous innings but with three balls remaining, there was no way Mushfiqur was letting go of this momentum.
From 93 to 97 he moved with a scoop of sheer cheek in the 50th over and those shots have been part and parcel of the innings. He moved to 99 with a flick, running an easy double. He just nudged the final delivery of the innings to complete his ninth ODI ton, the fastest in Bangladesh's ODI history, beating the one set by Shakib Al Hasan off 63 deliveries. Shakib had managed the feat back in 2009 against Zimbabwe.
Mushfiqur ended his innings unbeaten on 100 off 60, timing his shots to perfection all around the wicket with 14 fours and two sixes beside his name.
Earlier, Mushfiqur came out to bat in the 34th over of the innings after Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed for a 77-ball 73. With Towhid Hridoy for company, he put on 128 runs for the fifth wicket off just 78 deliveries. In the 43rd over of the innings, he smashed one off Curtis Campher to also bring up his 7000 runs in ODIs.
The beauty of Mushy's knock, in the end, was seen in the satisfaction of his smile as Bangladesh broke the record of their highest ODI total of 338, set in the first ODI of this series, to set a new high of 349 for 6.
