New market clashes: BNP leader Mokbul sent to jail after remand
A Dhaka court today sent BNP leader Mokbul Hossain to jail in a case filed over instigating clashes between shopkeepers and Dhaka College students in the capital's New Market area that left two persons dead and scores others wounded.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ishrat Jahan passed the order after Investigation Officer Halder Arpit Thakur, an inspector of New Market Police Station, produced him before the court on completion of his three-day remand in the case.
The magistrate, however, set tomorrow for hearing on a bail petition submitted by his lawyer.
In the forwarding report, the IO said Mokbul gave important information about the incident which was being verified. So, the IO appealed to the court to confine him in jail until the investigation is complete.
Upon hearing both the sides, the magistrate ordered to send the accused to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
On April 22, Mokbul, former New Market thana BNP president and current member of the party's Dhaka South unit convening committee, was held from his Dhanmondi home.
The following day, he was placed on a three-day remand after he was produced before another Dhaka court with a seven-day prayer.
